Chinook Salmon, the Largest, most prized game fish
can weigh up 1.5 kg and 30 kg or 3 pounds to 65 pounds. Chinook salmon
weighing 30 pounds or more are called Tyee salmon
and many of of our communities on Vancouver Island fish and catch many Tyee salmon.
The Chinook salmon
is also known as a spring salmon,
blackmouth salmon,
smiley salmon
and in the USA King salmon. Chinook salmon lives three to seven years before the spawn.
Coho Salmon,
are the second most targeted salmon
from
recreational sport fishers. The Coho salmon
lives for three
years and weigh from 1.3 kg and 14 kg - 3 pounds to 30 pounds.
The Coho salmon spends up to one full year in freshwater before heading to the Pacific Ocean for two years, some Coho
mature earlier and migrate to their home streams as jack salmon
only two years, Coho salmon
are also called Silver salmon
in the USA. In the Strait of Georgia, April to early June, small coho passing from the grilse stage to maturity are called bluebacks.

* Sockeye Salmon
is known and very much sought after for
thier superior flesh, colour and quality, The Sockeye salmon
is
internationally renowned. It is the slimmest and most strem lined of the Pacific Salmon species
and can weigh between 2.2 kg and 3.1 kg or 4 pounds to 7 lbs but can reach 6.3 kg or 14 lbs. Lives between 4 and 6 years and young sockeye salmon remain in freshwater nursery lakes a year or more before migrating to the sea.
* Pink Salmon
is the smallest of the wild Pacific Salmon species
and only lives for two years before returning to spawn.
Pink salmon
are more abundant to the northern waters in even
number years and in the southern waters in odd numbered years.
This species of Pacific Salmon
spawn in rivers and tributaries close to the Ocean as they head to sea as soon as they are hatched.
* Chum Salmon
looks like the Sockeye salmon
but is larger and
lives 3 to 5 years. This salmon can weigh 4.5 kg to 6.5 kg, or 10
pounds to 14 pounds, they can reach as big as 15kg or 33
pounds. The Chum salmon
develops very large teeth when
spawning and is also called a
dog salmon.
